mineralogy elements Co Cobalt

Co - Cobalt - TRANSITION METAL

Cobalt is a metallic chemical element that belongs to the family of transition metals. It is found in atomic number group 27 and on period 4 of the periodic table of elements. Its chemical symbol is “Co”.

Cobalt has a gray-blue color and is soft and malleable. It is highly resistant to corrosion and abrasion and has excellent high temperature resistance. Using alloys, Cobalt can be heated to very high temperatures, which is useful for the manufacture of metal products.

Cobalt is very reactive and is used in the manufacture of many alloys and compounds. It is widely used to produce stainless steels, aerospace metals and engine materials. Additionally, Cobalt is used in the manufacture of rechargeable batteries, magnetic materials, and medicines. Cobalt is also used to produce pigments, dyes and some catalysts.

Due to its strong resistance to corrosion and heat, Cobalt is considered one of the most durable and wear-resistant metals. Moreover, Cobalt is widely used in the medical sector, as it is used in the manufacture of drugs and medical devices which are insoluble.
