This collection of small animals carved from Peruvian soapstone brings together handcrafted pieces fashioned by Peruvian artisans. Soapstone, also known as steatite, is a soft metamorphic rock that lends itself particularly well to fine carving, allowing for rounded shapes and precise details. Each figurine represents a different animal, such as tortoises, horses, cats or bears. The natural colouring of the stone varies from light beige to dark brown, taking in grey or slightly greenish tones along the way, giving each piece a unique appearance despite a similar shape.

The artisans work the raw soapstone using simple tools, carving, sanding and then polishing each piece to achieve a smooth, pleasant-to-touch surface. This technique accounts for the small variations in size, shape and colouring that can be observed from one figurine to another within the collection.

These small soapstone sculptures lend themselves to a variety of decorative or collecting uses. They are equally suited to personal use or as an original gift idea for enthusiasts of minerals, South American craftsmanship or animal figurines. Whether one wishes to begin a themed collection of carved animals or simply acquire a unique piece of Peruvian craftsmanship, this selection offers a varied range of shapes and colours, reflecting the meticulous work of local sculptors on this soft and accessible stone.
