Staurolite - Natural minerals and crystals
Staurolite is a metamorphic mineral particularly noted for its distinctive crystal structure. Often described as a "cross stone", it forms under conditions of high temperature and high pressure, typical of metamorphic processes. Its chemical composition is complex and variable, consisting mainly of aluminium, iron, silicon and oxygen. staurolite is an excellent indicator of metamorphic conditions. Its presence in a rock allows geologists to deduce the temperatures and pressures to which that rock was subjected. Staurolites are commonly found in metamorphic raw rocks and minerals">rocks such as mica schists and gneisses, where they are associated with other minerals such as mica, quartz, and garnet. The formation of cross-shaped staurolite crystals is a complex phenomenon related to crystal growth and the mechanical stresses undergone by the mineral during its development. The cross-shaped twins, so characteristic of staurolite, result from the ordered stacking of atomic layers in different orientations.
