This secondary mineral typically forms in the oxidation zone of copper deposits, resulting from the supergene alteration of primary sulphides such as chalcopyrite or bornite.
Crystallographically, brochantite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale and a density of around 3.97. Its crystals, often prismatic or acicular, can form drusy aggregates of striking aesthetic appeal. The vitreous to silky lustre of this mineral, combined with its variable transparency, makes it a highly prized mineralogical specimen. The most notable deposits are found in Chile and Arizona, as well as in Namibia and the Russian Urals, regions where geological conditions favour its optimal crystallisation.
