Mineralogy
Crystallising in the orthorhombic system, purpurite typically displays a massive or microcrystalline appearance, rarely occurring as well-formed, individual crystals. Its lustre ranges from vitreous to dull, depending on the degree of surface weathering. The most notable deposits are found in Namibia, Portugal, France, and the United States, particularly in South Dakota. This mineral's genesis results from a progressive oxidation process that transforms the original ferrous phosphates, creating this unique chromatic palette ranging from violet-pink to deep purple, sometimes punctuated by brownish zones linked to the presence of iron oxides.
