About this piece

Fossil sea urchin from the Touraine faluns. The Mer des Faluns is an ancient sea that has now disappeared, having covered the west of France about 16 to 3.5 million years ago. After its withdrawal this sea left behind a rock rich in shell debris called the falun known to be extremely rich in fossils.

Scutella is an extinct genus of echinoderms, specifically an echinid, that lived during the Mesozoic era, specifically from the Jurassic to the Cretaceous. These marine organisms are characterized by their disc-shaped test (shell), composed of interlocking calcium carbonate plates, and by their radial symmetry. Their internal structure is composed of numerous tubules and radioles which allowed them to move and feed. The genus Scutella is particularly known for the beauty of its fossils, which often exhibit exceptional preservation of structural details.
